By downloading, installing, or using The Stranger mobile application (“App”), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service (“Terms”). If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the App.
These Terms constitute a legally binding agreement between you (“User,” “you,” or “your”) and The Stranger (“we,” “us,” or “our”).
The Stranger is a mobile application that delivers a 365-day journey of one daily portrait. Each day, the App shows the user:
All core features are free to use. The App contains no advertising, no paid tiers, no in-app purchases at the time of this writing. Portraits inside the App are crafted by us, grounded in publicly available demographic data, and are designed to be real in their numbers and composite in their names. They are not portraits of identifiable real individuals.
You must be at least 13 years old (or 16 in the European Economic Area, or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction) to use The Stranger. By using the App, you represent and warrant that:
The App contains descriptions of adult ordinary life — including poverty, labor, mortality, and the texture of difficult days. Children under the applicable minimum age should not use the App without a parent or guardian.
The Stranger does not require an account. There is no account registration, no sign-in, no email collection, and no password. The App functions fully without any identifying information.
Because there is no account, there is no account credential to protect, no password to recover, and no account termination flow. To stop using the App, simply uninstall it. To erase the data the App has stored on your device, use Settings → Erase everything before uninstalling.
You agree to use the App only for lawful, personal, non-commercial purposes. Specifically, you agree to:
You may NOT use the App to:
Violation of any of these provisions may result in immediate termination of your right to use the App, with or without notice.
The App’s portraits combine demographic data with literary writing. They are designed to convey emotional truth grounded in statistical reality, not to describe specific real individuals. In particular:
You must not use the App’s portraits or counterfactual lines as the basis for hiring decisions, credit decisions, identity verification, demographic targeting, immigration determinations, or any other high-stakes decision-making.
The App is designed for empathy, curiosity, and perspective — not for measurement of specific persons.
The Stranger and its original content — including portraits, counterfactual lines, App design, code, and the curation of demographic data into literary form — is owned by us and protected by international copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, and other intellectual property laws.
These Terms grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the App for your own non-commercial enjoyment. Nothing else.
Underlying statistics (income, life expectancy, household composition, commute durations, education levels) are sourced from public datasets that are themselves in the public domain or made available under permissive licenses. Our composition, framing, and literary treatment of these numbers is original work owned by us.
When you use the App’s “Share this stranger” feature, you generate a short payload (text or image) for sharing through your operating system’s share sheet. You may share that payload personally on social media, in messaging applications, or in other personal contexts. You may not aggregate or systematically republish the App’s portraits.
You retain ownership of the onboarding answers you provide. Because those answers never leave your device, we cannot and do not claim any rights in them.
The App is built using Expo and React Native, distributed through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Each of these platforms has its own terms and privacy policies. We are not responsible for the availability, content, or practices of those platforms.
The App contains no embedded third-party analytics, advertising, or social SDKs. It does not call any external APIs during normal use.
We reserve the right, at our sole discretion, to modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the App at any time, with or without notice. We will not be liable to you or any third party for any modification, suspension, or discontinuation of the App.
This includes the right to change or remove features, change the cadence of the daily journey, change or replace portraits, introduce paid features in a future version, or retire the App entirely. Where feasible, we will provide advance notice through an in-app message.
THE APP IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.
We do not warrant that:
To the maximum extent permitted by law, in no event shall The Stranger, its owner, officers, employees, agents, or affiliates be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including without limitation loss of profits, data, use, goodwill, or other intangible losses, resulting from:
Our total liability to you for any claim arising out of or relating to these Terms or the App shall not exceed the amount you have paid us in the twelve months preceding the claim. Because the App is currently free, our maximum liability is one hundred United States dollars (USD 100).
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of certain warranties or damages. In those jurisdictions, our liability will be limited to the maximum extent permitted by law.
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless The Stranger and its owner, officers, employees, agents, and affiliates from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses, including reasonable attorneys’ fees, arising out of or in any way connected with:
You may terminate your use of the App at any time by uninstalling it. To erase local data first, use Settings → Erase everything.
We may terminate or suspend your right to use the App immediately, without prior notice, for any reason — including breach of these Terms. Because there is no account, termination by us takes effect at the App level (for example, through a future App update that disables the App for a given user or region) rather than through account deactivation.
These Terms are governed by the laws of (to be populated with the jurisdiction where your business entity is registered — e.g. “the Republic of Turkey” or “the State of Delaware, USA”), without regard to conflict of law principles.
Before filing a formal claim, you agree to contact us at cankatsarac@gmail.com to attempt informal resolution. We will respond within 30 days.
Any disputes not resolved informally shall be resolved by binding arbitration administered by (to be populated with an arbitration body appropriate to your jurisdiction). You and The Stranger waive the right to a jury trial and to participate in a class action, to the extent permitted by law.
This Section 15 does not apply to claims for injunctive relief to protect intellectual property rights, claims that cannot be subject to arbitration by law, or small-claims-court matters.
We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. We will notify users of material changes through an in-app notification on next launch.
Continued use of the App after changes indicates acceptance. If you do not agree to the revised Terms, you must stop using the App.
If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision will be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary so that the remaining Terms remain in full force and effect.
These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy and any additional terms referenced inside the App, constitute the entire agreement between you and The Stranger concerning the App and supersede all prior agreements.
Our failure to enforce any right or provision of these Terms will not be considered a waiver of those rights.
You may not assign or transfer these Terms without our prior written consent. We may assign these Terms freely, including in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, on notice to you.
We are not liable for any failure or delay in performance due to circumstances beyond our reasonable control, including natural disasters, acts of war or terrorism, labor disputes, government actions, internet outages, or outages of the platforms we depend on (Apple App Store, Google Play, Expo).
